Introduction : The handloom sector is one of the largest unorganised sectors after agriculture and constitutes an integral part of the rural and semi rural livelihood. It is also the country’s second largest employment generation sector next to agriculture. The handloom sector is basically a labour intensive and the costs in handloom sector is very less , it also provides livelihood to many people basically it generate employment among women.

Assam being one of the backward regions of India. Now – a – days the importance of handloom sector in rural areas of Assam is now upgrading. Women from backward regions of Assam used to weave cloths in handlooms initially for their respective households. By this paper it is also highlighted that the socio- economic conditions of women in handloom sector in rural areas of Assam.

Objectives :

1. To identify the socio- economic conditions of women in handloom sector in rural areas of Assam

2. To find out the employment generation among women through handloom sector.

3. To identify the major obstacles faced by women who are working in this sector

4. To provide some remedial measures for permanent settlement in this sector.

Methodology : In order to achieve the objectives the study mainly depends on primary sources of data. Neverthless secondary data has been used to supplement the primary data.

Findings : No doubt the handloom sector generate a large number of employment among women but this sector does not provide a proper plate form for upgrading the talent of women. Many a times women face several difficulties to grow up their activities in rural areas of Assam. Because various problems and hurdles are there which they face frequently. Financially, this sector is not good enough to solve all the problems faced by them.

Suggestions :

1. Quick and adequate steps must be taken by the Govt to provide loans to women and gives financial strength.

2. There should be taken an initiative for providing a market for women who are working in this sector in rural areas of Assam.

3. Proper market price should be given

4. The socio- economic conditions of women in handloom sector should be upgraded.

Conclusion : From the above discussion it is clear that though the working women of handloom sector in rural areas of Assam faces many hurdles and obstacles but this sector gives employment opportunities among women. By strenghthening their position in the society women are earning by their own and they are the inspiration for the society generation by generation.
